Ebb Tide on the Sandbars

When the tide drops in Westport, people slosh out to the shoals, where exploring is as rewarding as in the tide pools and easier on the feet.

What's the difference between a shoal and a sandbar? We've always called it the latter at Westport's Compo Beach. Please explain. Thanks.

A sandbar is a shoal -- a shallow area. I've always liked the word because when I was a kid, I played Babe Ruth League baseball at a field called Shoals Oval, which was owned by Shoals Restaurant in Great Kills on Staten Island. I didn't know what Shoals meant -- I thought it was a family name -- but I liked it and it has good associations for me.
