Ferries

The controversy over the State of Connecticut’s decision to shut down two old, old ferries on the Connecticut River made me think of all the ferries I’ve taken over the years. Here they are, in approximate chronological order:

Staten Island Ferry

Brooklyn Ferry (Bay Ridge to Staten Island, now defunct)

Bayonne Ferry (Bayonne to Staten Island, now defunct), Kill Van Kull

Essex, N.Y., to Charlotte, Vt., Lake Champlain

Fishers Island Ferry

Ferry from Point du Bout to Fort de France, Martinique

Bridgeport to Port Jefferson Ferry

Rocky Hill to Glastonbury Ferry, Connecticut River

Block Island Ferry (Point Judith to Block Island)

Smith Island (Md.) Ferry from Crisfield, Md., Chesapeake Bay (it was while taking this small, pedestrian-only ferry in 1987 that I remarked to Tom Horton, a writer who lived on Smith Island at the time, that it must be kind of neat to take have to ride this ferry, to which he responded that it was liking taking a 20-minute elevator ride twice a day)

Block Island Ferry (New London to Block Island)

Ferry from St. Thomas to Tortolla

Governors Island Ferry

New London to Orient Point Ferry

There are some good photos of and lamentations about the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry and the Hadlyme-Chester Ferry here, on Soundbounder. Matt’s a little bummed out. I agree with him -- it’s a bad decision.

This is fun! Mine are:
New London-Orient Point (highly recommended for biking to wineries)
Bridgeport-Port Jeff
Prince Edward Island-Magdalen Islands
Bar Harbor-Nova Scotia
Calais-Dover
Hamburg(?)-Denmark (not sure of the towns, but this ferry had the entire train I was riding get onto the ferry and then we continued north on the train once in Denmark)

Let's see....

Grand Isle - Plattsburgh (Lake Champlain)
Charlotte- Essex (Lake Champlain)
Staten Island
Shelter Island (both of them)
New London- Orient Point
Chester-Hadlyme
Rocky Hill- Glastonbury (joyride round-trip)
Pt Judith- Block Island
Woods Hole- Martha's Vineyard
Wood's Hole- Nantucket (1970's)
Hyannis- Nantucket (1980's: these two really count as one)
Chappaquiddick
North Bimini- South Bimini (I was about 5-6 years old, but I remember it. There may be some Chesapeake, Delaware, and Great South Bay ferries from that period too, but I was just a toddler, so they don't count.
Born in 1965, I don't remember the Hudson River Ferries.

There are some others in the past two decades, but they were more like excursion boats than ferries: Catalina Island, Dry Tortugas, Casco Bay etc.

This was fun....and a lot harder than I thought.
One more thing...it's not a typo; I've never taken the PortJeff- Bridgeport Ferry

Interesting! Recently I sailed across the English Channel from England to France in the famous Dover-Calais route.
